CLEVELAND - With many moms and dads working outside the home to support their families, more grandparents are taking on caregiver roles for their grandchildren.

But just because a grandparent raised children of their own, it’s probably been decades since they’ve cared for a baby and in that time, important safety recommendations can change.

For instance, research has shown that infants placed on their side or stomach are at greater risk for sudden-infant-death-syndrome or ‘SIDS.’

But the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommendation to place babies on their back to sleep did not come until the 1990’s, so parents who raised babies in the 1980’s or earlier may be unaware of this important update.

Ellen Rome, M.D., of Cleveland Clinic Children’s said it’s important to keep all caregivers ‘in-the-know’.

“If we have extended family – grandparents, aunties, anybody – caring for your child, bring them in with you to the pediatrician visit; help share articles and if you have a grandma or grandpa who’s not e-savvy, print them out for them,” said Dr. Rome.

If the caregiver is technologically savvy, she recommends going online where they can see firsthand all of the current and most up-to-date recommendations.

Dr. Rome said that communication between parent and grandparent is key. When parents are faced with a caregiver who is using outdated practices while caring for their child, she says it’s crucial to talk about it.

“It’s worthwhile bringing that parent and grandparent together and talking it through,” said Dr. Rome. “Listen to what the goal of the grandparent is and what the goal of the parent is and how they can come together to share best practices and eliminate the ones that are not so safe.”
